What Causes Shin Splints And How To Treat Them

If you feel pain along your shin after or during exercise it could be that you have a condition called shin splints. Some of the symptoms of this condition are red and inflamed skin, the shin is painful to the touch and aches along both or one side. It can be caused through over exercising, but there are some other causes as well.

For instance, people with flat feet can sometimes develop the condition. Rolling the feet inwards when you run or walk so that there is excessive ankle pronation can also affect the shinbones and cause pain. This can happen when you have poor running form as well as in people with flat feet. Wearing the wrong kind of shoes when running can also cause you to develop the problem of painful shins.

However, if you have pain along the shins you shouldn't forget about exercising as it is important to your health. It is better to get advice from a podiatrist on the cause of your pain so that this can be addressed. You will need to rest and perhaps take anti-inflammatory medication until the condition heals and then take up your exercise routine again, while following the advice of the podiatrist. You can also use an ice pack to relieve the pain and inflammation.

Once you start to exercise, choose low impact activities such as swimming. In fact, you can go swimming while you are recovering from the condition to ensure that you still remain strong and healthy. If you have flat feet you will probably be advised to wear orthotics, which are inserts in your shoes that support the arch of the foot. Physiotherapy might be needed if the cause is from tight or imbalanced muscles.

While exercise is good for you, pain is not and is a warning that something is wrong so should be taken seriously. For instance, heel pain can be caused by plantar fasciitis. When ligaments and tendons are in the wrong place or undeveloped it usually causes stress pain as other ligaments try to compensate. Your heel is the landing place of every step and so pain in that area will be felt whenever you walk.

However, the condition can be reversed with the correct care and it may only take a few sessions of corrective care to restore the joints and ligaments so that they function correctly again. Most such problems can be corrected without surgery and you will be able to walk again without pain.
